Job Description

The Hospitalist (Nocturnist) is responsible for managing inpatient admissions, acute cross-cover care, and clinical stabilization overnight. The role ensures the successful execution of rapid emergency department admissions, intensive care step-down management, and comprehensive night-shift medical coverage while preserving absolute clinical quality, swift diagnostic evaluation, and safety.

 

Required Qualifications * Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an approved medical school.

  • Successful completion of an accredited Internal Medicine Residency training program.

  • Board Certification or active Board Eligibility via the ABIM.

  • Active, unencumbered license to practice medicine within the state of Alabama.

Preferred Skills * Excellent diagnostic speed, acute inpatient procedural tracking, and strong clinical decision-making capabilities without immediate daytime oversight.

  • Calm, communicative, and professional leadership during night-shift clinical crises.

Experience Required Completion of a residency track or active professional clinical experience as a hospitalist or nocturnal provider within an active acute-care medical center.

Responsibilities Duties:

Key Responsibilities * Coordinate and execute midnight inpatient admissions, assessing acute charts and establishing baseline overnight treatment orders.

  • Prepare comprehensive admission summaries, transfer reports, and detailed handover notes for the incoming daytime medical shifts.

  • Provide emergency cross-cover medical response for existing floor inpatients, tracking status changes or telemetry alerts.

  • Coordinate with emergency medicine physicians, critical care intensivists, nocturnal nursing teams, and laboratory networks.

  • Monitor patient vital parameters during acute deteriorations, promptly executing code responses or ICU transfer configurations.

  • Maintain absolute charting alignment satisfying federal coding, core measures, and utilization compliance benchmarks.
